Streaker Ramblings - Freeman Iceberg Race 15 - 26/12/2016

Not a good forecast for sailing at Piddinghoe on Boxing Day – anything from 16 to 27 knots – however on arrival at the pond it was sunny, clear skies but cold. Obviously the outlook put off qiuite a few series competitors and the fleet was depleted to nine boats.

Laurence Venus as RO (he had to work out the overall points) assisted by Anna Freeman set up a course which included at least three gybes per lap in a basic ‘M’ shape – a familiar format this winter – with the start in the middle of the south bank as shown below.

At the gun Jonty Freeman (Laser Radial – NSSC) having sailed along the line towards the south bank tacked onto port just after passing Ed Rollestone (Oppie - NSSC) and sailed off ahead of Matt Springall (Laser full rig – NSSC) and Alan Simmons (Streaker – Lancing) with Tiim Cox (Laser Radial – NSSC) all fairly close to the pin end of the line.

Jonty had picked the correct end of the line and was away out in front up the short windward leg to the mark just off the clubhouse and clear away on the reach along the west bank to a mark off the Fisherman’s bay. Tim was next along this leg with Matt astern and to windward of Michael Veale and Mike Rosier in their RS 200 (NSSC).

Jonty led the first group off to the next mark – which wasn’t as he headed for the outer mark of the start line instead of the mark off the west end of the Island.

First to see the mistake was Michael followed by Tim with Alan turning third leaving Jonty behind him. On the following leg, towards the east bank, Tim had a spectacular capsize allowing Alan to pass him with Jonty now ahead of Alan. Along the leg behind the Island Matt also passed Alan.

Once on the beat up the south shore both Jonty and Matt began to close in on Michael and although they did not catch him on that first lap Jonty was just 5 seconds behind at the finish line with Matt another 7 seconds astern.

The wind was blowing a good force five with many vicious gusts into the force six range and up the beat Alan firstly went in to irons on a tack allowing Bill Wates (Laser Radial – NSSC) to get past and then he decided that any more of that and he would go swimming. As he was not keen on that as an idea he decided that he would call it a day and go ashore. As he was on his way back ashore Julian Dobson (Laser full rig) also passed him and Tim Cox also went ashore on that windward leg. That left Chris Rosier (Laser Radial – NSSC) and Ed in his Oppie to bring up the tail end.

Lap 2 saw Jonty and Matt both going ahead of Michael – in spite of some energetic work with the RS200 Gennaker – the Lasers just got up on the plane earlier and faster. Julian went up to third place when, Bill came to grief with a  capsize into the reeds along the east shore. With the help of the safety boat he eventually recovered but by that time Chris had passed him and Ed was close on his stern.

Lap 3 had Jonty still in the lead and pulling away from Matt to cross the finish line 30 seconds ahead with Matt 18 seconds ahead of Michael. Julian was fourth  to cross  well behind with Chris 5th and over a minute in front of Bill. Ed was 3 minutes 30 seconds further astern and was finished at the end of this lap.

Lap 4 saw no positional change from lap 3 with Jonty now 45 seconds ahead of Matt who was 18 secoinds in front of Michael. Julian was still 4th wiith Chris behind him and Bill last to cross. Julian, Chris and Bill were finished at the end of this lap.

Lap 5, the final lap had just Jonty, Matt and Michael still racing and Jonty was almost back to the finish line when he was caught by a gust and capsized, he got the Laser back upright only for it ot go over again – and Matt was closing in on him. He finnaly recovered and crossed the line still 25 seconds in the lead with Matt also being chased hard by Michael – the gap was down to 22 seconds.

It had been a very energetic race with some very powerful gusts hitting the small fleet and a good few capsizes. With the results worked out the winner was Jonty with Matt second and Ed in his Oppie third.

Whilst Laurence worked out the race results and overall series positions there was a generous helping of Mulled Wine and Mince pies for all to share. And so to the prize giving and for the overall Freeman Iceberg Series the winner was Duncan McDonald who unfortunately was not present to receive the Trophy from John Freeman. Second place overall went to Rupert Smith who was on hand to receive his prize. Third place overall went to Paul Ryan who was also absent.

The Cadet Series, with results extracted from the overall series, was won by ED Rollestone who had sailed consistently very well throughout the series with several race results up ‘among the big boys’. He received his prize and the trophy with a grin on his face a mile wide.Second place was awarded to Thomas Beck with Roan Briggs taking third place, unfortunately neither were present to accept their prizes.

Altogether a successful series was a bit windier than last year but only two races were not sailed – due to gale force winds – and even stronger in the forecasts. Altogether 45 boats sailed at least one race with 10 entered in at least six plus duties .

The next race is on New Year’s Day – at 2.00 pm (allowing for some sobering up after excess the.night before) with the Elford Numbum series next Sunday 7th Jan.

Happy New Year to All my readers
